Syllabus Objectives – Kinetic Particle Theory

Self Assessment Checklist

Kinetic Particle Theory I can do this!
(a) Describe the solid, liquid and gaseous states of matter.
(b) Explain the interconversion of states of matter in terms of the kinetic particle theory and of the energy changes involved.
(c) Explain the differences between boiling and evaporation.
(d) Given the melting point and boiling point of a substance, determine the state of matter the substance exists in at a particular temperature.
(e) Describe and explain evidence for the movement of particles in liquids and gases (using diffusion).
(f) Explain everyday effects of diffusion in terms of particles, e.g. the spread of aroma;  tea and coffee grains in water.
(g) State qualitatively the effect of molecular mass on the rate of diffusion and explain the dependence of rate of diffusion on temperature.
