Redox – Oxidation and Reduction I can do this!
(a) Define oxidation in terms of gain of oxygen, loss of hydrogen and loss of electrons.  
(b) Define reduction in terms of loss of oxygen, gain of hydrogen and gain of electrons.  
(c) Define oxidation as an increase in oxidation state.  
(d) Define reduction as a decrease in oxidation state.  
(e) Identify redox reactions in terms of oxygen/hydrogen gain/loss, electron gain/loss and changes in oxidation state  
(f) Identify chemical reactions that are not redox reactions – neutralisation and precipitation reactions.  
(g) Define an oxidising agent.  
(h) Define a reducing agent.  
(i) Describe the use of aqueous potassium iodide to test for the presence of an oxidising agent from the resulting colour change.  
(j) Describe the use of acidified potassium manganate (VII) to test for the presence of a reducing agent from the resulting colour change.
