Syllabus Objectives

At O levels, students are required to describe the general rules of solubility for common salts to include nitrates, chlorides (including silver and lead), sulfates (including barium, calcium and lead), carbonates, hydroxides, Group I cations and ammonium salts

Solubility Rules

Chlorides

All chlorides are soluble except lead(II) chloride and silver chloride.

Carbonates

All carbonates are insoluble except Group I metal carbonates and ammonium carbonates.

Sulfates

All sulfates are soluble except calcium sulfate, lead(II) sulfate, barium sulfate.

Nitrates

All nitrates are soluble.

Group I and ammonium salts

All Group I metal salts and ammonium salts are soluble.
